Centrelink help for Dandenong boarding house residents
Centrelink has acted swiftly to provide support to victims of the boarding house fire in Dandenong early this morning, Federal Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig said today.
Senator Ludwig has praised Centrelink officers who attended the evacuation centre soon after the fire in Melbourne’s outer east.
"I know a group of Centrelink staff responded quickly, providing those affected with specialised support,” he said.
“Most of the victims left homeless by the fire were Centrelink customers.”
“The Centrelink officers began assessments for emergency assistance.”
“I also understand a Centrelink Multicultural Services Officer and other experienced staff are working to fast track crisis payments.”
"Centrelink is working with the Dandenong City Council, Red Cross and the Victorian Department of Human Services, contributing to a coordinated response to this incident.”
“It is pleasing to see Centrelink staff showing their flexibility and responsiveness and working in partnership with other agencies and NGOs”
“This fire affects those who can least afford to lose permanent accommodation and I hope they can regain their feet quickly with the help of Centrelink and the other agencies involved in the response.”
